GO khlong - SEE the venice of the east
The khlongs are the canals that crisscross the city and give Bangkok its old nickname, the Venice of the East. In the past the main form of getting around the city was by boat. That was a long time ago, but the khlongs still give you a glimpse of the old Bangkok, before the glitz and the shiny towers appeared. This run takes you along the San Saep, one of Bangkok's most important khlongs. Starting in the thick of the city, we'll head eastwards into quieter territory, with lots to see on the way. There's usually a welcome breeze from time to time, but be warned: like the other Venice, these canals can kick up a bit of a stink.

Say wat? - run THE TEMPLES
There are hundreds of temples (or wats) in Bangkok - old ones, new ones, big ones, small ones, and they're not all Buddhist either. This run will take you through the heart of old Bangkok where most of the more well known temples are found. We'll start at Wat Pho, then cross the river to the great Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn, just in time to catch it light up at sunrise. Next, we'll run north, then cross back over the river to Wat Maharat, the Temple of the Great Relic. From there, we'll wend our way through Phra Nakhon, via the Democracy Monument, and finish with a climb up the man-made hill of Wat Saket, the Golden Mount.

park life - the green lungs of the city
Bangkok's parks are havens of peace and tranquility, a welcome refuge from the hubbub of the city, but they're bubbling with a life of their own. You'll find runners, walkers, aerobics classes, people doing yoga and tai chi, tea-drinkers, and people eating breakfast, as well as an unexpected array of wildlife. This run will take you through three of Bangkok's parks, starting with Lumphini Park, home of the awesome monitor lizards.

chinatown
Money and goods change hands around the clock in Chinatown, and many of the family businesses here go back generations. Gold, jewellery, fruit, vegetables, toys, buttons - you name it, there will be someone who sells it. The hustle and bustle makes this one of the slower, more challenging runs, but setting out early ensures we miss the throngs that will descend on Chinatown later in the day. Starting in the labyrinth of streets along the river where the first Europeans settled, we'll then weave our way up into Chinatown and beyond.

one for the road - the midnight run
For those of you mad enough to want to run around Bangkok in the middle of the night (yep, me too!) this run will take you on a whistle-stop tour of Bangkok under cover of darkness. Not only will you get to see the Grand Palace and Wat Arun in all their illuminated glory, but we'll take a run on the wild side through the neon-glow of Bangkok's notorious red light district, before heading back to Khao San Road for a thirst-quenching beer.
START TIME: 11 pm INCLUDED: 60 minute run, 6km - 8km, one complimentary beer PACE: Comfortable THE NITTY-GRITTY: 1,250 baht |
